Elder Jinchi was the abbot of Guanyin temple located in Black Wind Mountain, where Tang Sanzang and his disciples were staying. Upon seeing the beautiful and valuable kasaya that Tang Sanzang possessed, Elder Jinchi’s greed was aroused. He desired to obtain the kasaya for himself. To achieve his goal, he enlisted the help of two monks, Guangmou and Guangzhi.
The three of them devised a plan to set fire to the temple where Tang Sanzang and his disciples were staying, hoping that in the ensuing chaos, they would be able to steal the kasaya. However, their malicious plan did not go as intended. The fire they set ended up spreading uncontrollably, and the three conspirators found themselves trapped by the very flames they had ignited.
In the end, their greed and treachery led to their own destruction. The fire consumed the temple, and Jinchi Elder, Guangmou, and Guangzhi perished in the blaze they had started. This story serves as a moral lesson within “Journey to the West,” highlighting the dangers of greed and the inevitable consequences of malicious actions.
